Conducting a Literature Review

Author: Tanzim Redwan; Editor: Blake E. Davis

Note: This system is applicable for both review papers and literature surveys in novel studies.

Purpose

A literature review helps identify what is already known, uncover gaps, and refine your research question. Steps

  1. Select Databases: Use PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar;
  2. Develop Search Terms: Use keywords (e.g., “clinical risk assessment,” “patient safety”) and Boolean operators (AND, OR);
  3. Filter Results: Focus on recent studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses;
  4. Analyze Findings: Summarize key findings and note gaps where your study can contribute;

Tools

Reference management software like Zotero or Medeley or EndNote. (Not using it is a crime to yourself) Systematic review guidelines like PRISMA. (Crucial)
